The Kukui Cup Project explores novel ways to utilize concepts from information technology, community-based social marketing, serious games, and educational pedagogy to support sustained change in sustainability-related behaviors. The current focus of the Kukui Cup Project is residence hall energy challenges. In future, we plan to expand our scope to include other sustainability resources (water, waste, food, etc.) and other contexts (offices, residences, etc.)

A defining feature of Kukui Cup challenges is a blend of real world and virtual world activities, all tied together through game mechanics. In the real world, players participate in workshops, geocaching, scavenger hunts, artistic/musical events, win prizes, and most importantly, learn about their current lifestyle and its impact on sustainability behaviors. In the virtual world of the Kukui Cup web application, players earn points, achieve badges, increase their sustainability “literacy” through readings and videos, and use social networking mechanisms to engage with friends and family about the issues raised. The challenge is designed to make real-world and virtual-world activities complementary and synergistic.

Kupu, with funding from Hawaii Energy and in collaboration with the University of Hawaii (UH) at Manoa, is seeking a current college student or recent college graduate that has a background in communications, environmental education, or information technology and awareness regarding the need for Hawaii’s sustainability.The Kukui Cup Challenge combines real-time energy feedback, energy education, multiple forms of incentives, and gamification techniques to support positive changes in energy behavior. Unknown to most people, Mauna Loa is home to numerous ice caves located near the summit. Very little is known about these remote caves, although they are scientifically very interesting; they contain records of past climate, serve as potential Mars analogs, and their microbial communities are extremely isolated. This project is aimed at relocating ice caves on Mauna Loa.

In 1923, Hawaii-based pineapple producers and canners formed a cooperative R&D program with the goal of developing new varieties of pineapple and technologies related to pineapple cultivation and canning. The Association of Hawaii Pineapple Canners established an experimental station (AHPCES) that yielded had a stream of incremental innovations until the early 1990s, when a blockbuster new variety, the 73-114, revolutionized the global pineapple business. This project investigates how successful the Pineapple industry’s experiment station was by collecting and analyzing Hawaii R&D spending, AHPCES innovations, AHPCES plant patents, and productivity change in Hawaii’s pineapple industry. In addition, the project takes a close look at the experimental station’s organizational structure, incentives provided to teams of researchers to develop successful products, and changes in its structure over time to adapt to different industry circumstances and sponsor support.

The UHCC-JCI Fellows will work in a dynamic team environment under the mentorship of the Hawaii Johnson Controls Education Coordinator to provide peer to peer environmental awareness. Fellows will also collaborate with the UHCC Sustainability Board consisting of experts and faculty from all campuses, as well as an Advisory Board of Hawaii’s energy industry leaders. This will provide an unprecedented opportunity to gain the skills needed for a successful career in sustainability and energy in Hawaii.

This projects examines relationship factors among college women who are involved in heterosexual, monogamous, and sexual relationships and are using oral contraceptive medications for the purpose of preventing pregnancy. Information will be collected from participants through the use of questionnaires and questions involve demographic and informational questions about the participants, their partners, and their relationships; the use of birth control methods; pregnancy history, and sexual activities.
