    Application Process and Requirements

    Available Awards

Funding is available to exceptional UH Mānoa undergraduate students enrolled in their first bachelor’s degree program who submit a proposal for their own research. Students who meet the application requirements are eligible to apply for one award per proposal cycle. There are two types of awards for each proposal cycle: Undergraduate Research Grants and Travel Grants.  Funds up to $5000 per applicant are available at the discretion of the Council based on proposal (including budget), with some proposals funded at lower amounts. Proposals are accepted from 9/9 until 10/10 in the Fall, and from 2/2 until 3/3 in the Spring. *

    Undergraduate Research Grants
Qualified students may make proposal requests for individual research-related expenses (supplies, travel, etc.)

Group proposals involve two or more undergraduate students.

    Undergraduate Research – Travel Awards
Qualified students may apply for travel funds to supplement the costs of attending a specific professional conference where they will present their research or creative project. To be eligible, students should be the first author on the presentation, poster, or creative project.

    Application Processing
Applications are paperless and all materials are due by the deadline.  Applications are processed and reviewed by the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Council (UROC) within one month of the submission deadline.  Students will be notified of the decision via email after the Council has made a decision.

    Fund Disbursement
After notification, recipients and their faculty mentors must sign and submit a Memorandum of Agreement in order to receive funds. Award recipients will receive funds through their MyUH tuition account.  The funds will generally be disbursed in two 50% increments at the beginning of the award semester and the following semester. Applicants must have at least one semester remaining at UH Mānoa before completion of their bachelor’s degree. Applicants must fulfill funding requirements during the semester of award, including a presentation of research and a written report.
