Detailed proposals must be uploaded with the application in .pdf format. The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Council (UROC) regards the strength of your proposal as one of the key components of a successful application. With that in mind, proposals:
- Must be saved as a .pdf with the filename ”[your last name].[your first name]“
- Must be no longer than three pages, single-spaced, 12-point font
- Must include an itemized budget as a supplement to the proposal
- Must include application status (at least pending) of compliance with ethical guidelines if research involves human/animal subjects or hazardous materials
- May include supplemental materials in addition to the three-page limit, but only those deemed absolutely essential for evaluation
- Must include:
Problem Statement
The problem statement should highlight the issue that your proposal aims to address. These statements may vary, particularly for those proposing creative projects.
Objectives and Methods
The objectives should be clear and relevant to the field or discipline, and include the methods by which you intend to meet the objectives.
Applicant’s Role
The proposal should clearly define what your role will be in the proposed project.
Timeline
A clear and detailed timeline should be included in the proposed project, taking into account the feasibility of your timeline as a factor for the judgment of the proposal.
Biographical Sketch
Please provide a brief statement of your academic background, the experience or interests you have, and why the proposed project is important to you. Also, please explain how the proposed project relates to your academic or professional goals. For group projects, each member will provide their own sketch.
Itemized Budget and Justification
You must include an itemized budget as a supplement your three-page proposal that justifies the projected expenses. This may be a simple one-page, two-column list with justification notes. Items covered by grants may include chemicals, supplies, materials, reference materials, copying/printing, postage, software, travel, presentation materials, facilities rental, stipend, and other related costs. Items that are NOT covered include normal laboratory operations and major hardware/equipment purchases. UROP will evaluate budgets and may award lesser amounts than budgeted.
Works/References Cited
Proposals should list books, articles or other sources relevant to the background and significance of the project. Please cite sources central to the project showing completion of critical background research. Works/references cited are not included in the three-page limit for proposals.
Research Conduct
If projects involve human or animal subjects, or hazardous materials, you must follow steps to seek compliance with ethical standards for such research. Applicants supplement their proposal with documentation indicating compliance status (at least pending).
